Sharing our favourite ways to relax before bed is one of our favourite topics of conversation here at the Time2Sleep office. Each of us has our own relaxation routine that we swear by to help us put aside the cares of the day and wind down, ready to drop off.
Here are our top 5 Time2Sleep bedtime relaxation tips:
1. Allocate a “worry time”
A common reason for people struggling to fall asleep is that their minds start to race with worries and endless “to do” lists as soon as they get into bed, making it hard to switch off. By allocating a time earlier in the day – maybe 20 minutes – to think about the things that are worrying you and writing a list of possible solutions and a to do list, you can help to make bedtime a less stressful experience. If your mind starts to focus on worries, tell yourself that everything is in hand.
2. Drink herbal tea
Have you noticed we’re big fans of herbal tea at Time2Sleep? That is because it not only tastes delicious but it contains beneficial herbs like chamomile and Valerian Root to help soothe you and calm your mind. Sip it as a perfect bedtime drink.
3. Unwind in a warm bath
A warm bath is a great way to soothe tired, aching muscles and unwind after a busy day. Adding an aromatherapy bath oil can help promote relaxation and will leave you skin feeling soft and smelling gorgeous.
4. Try meditation or yoga
A relaxation practice such as yoga or meditation is a great way to shift your mind and body down a gear and prepare yourself for sleep. Choose something that involves a breathing practice or mindfulness but don’t do any kind of vigorous exercise for at least three hours before bedtime.
5. Distract your mind
Do you remember what your grandmother told you about counting sheep to help you sleep? Well, it turns out that there is some truth in that. Distracting your mind by counting can help to combat overthinking. Focusing on your breath or consciously trying to relax each individual part of the body can have the same effect.
